Social Studies:  Learning Opportunities

We are currently wrapping up Unit 4 Transportation and Movement, things that still need to be discussed are:

  1.  Steamboats and the Transcontinental Railroad: how did these new inventions affect the lives, migration, and economy of the United States regions.
  2.  Erie Canal:  who made it, how long was it, and how did it impact the movement of goods and people.

Things that still need to be discussed:  Unit 5:  Industrialization and Urbanization:

      1.  What is a profit and risk and the relationship between the two.

  1.  What is supply and demand and the relationship between the two.
  2.  Industrial Revolution (how people began to produce goods by machine instead of by hand)
  3.  New Inventions:  spinning wheel, power loom, assembly line, electricity, and steel production impacted people and the economy. 
  4.  Explain the connection between industrialization and urbanization. 
  5.  Supply and Price (how did industrial inventions make a difference) 
  • ​Powerloom (Cotton was produced quicker)
  • Steamboat (larger loads could be shipped cheaper and faster)
  • Assembly line (faster production, less waste, and higher quality of product)
  • Bessemer Process (revolutionized steel manufacture by decreasing it costs.

      7.  Demand for workers (how immigration related to the supply and demand for workers)

      8.  Life in the City during the Industrial Revolution (housing conditions, factory working conditions, family life, societal backlash based on ethnicity for                     immigrants) 

      9.  Concepts of “melting pot,” “salad bowl,” and “cultural mosaic” to explain the impact of immigration on population growth and diversity in the United                     States.

    10.  The Great Migration:  (European and Chinese migration,) Ellis Island, and Angel Island (What are these and where are they locateed)

    11.  American Diversity (values, religion, language, and customs)

    12.  Differentiate between money,checks, debit cards, and credit cards.  Identify advantages and disadvantages of each type of monetary exchange.
