Learning Opportunities and Resources

Reading/English/Writing:

We have currently covered all of our 4th grade ELA standards.  However, this is the time of year when we are usually working really hard on our writing skills and pulling everything together.  I truly feel like there are still many things that you can do at home, especially if you have access to a computer and the internet.  I am going to put some ideas here for you:

  • Success Maker and Study Island
    • These are resources that we use on a weekly basis at school that can now also be accessed at home.  Success Maker is a program that your children have all been placed in and are currently working on skills they need practice on.  Study Island is focused specifically on 4th grade skills.  Your child can work on ANY of the ELA topics.  Some really important topics for 4th graders would include theme, point of view, and vocabulary skills (ex. context clues, inferring).
    • Access through the following link – https://beau.k12.la.us/39756
  • Scholastic Learn at Home
    • This is a free resource and it looks like an amazing tool!  We use Scholastic Storyworks at school and the kids really enjoy the enjoy the stories, slideshows, virtual field trips, and the many other resources.  One of Scholastic’s main authors is Lauren Tarshis who also writes the popular “I Survived” series.  It appears that their plan is to provide day-to-day opportunities for “reading-thinking-growing” for 20+ days.
    • This is the link for their site – https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com/support/learnathome.htm
  • Rockin’ Resources
    • This website is offering free writing mini lessons now through April 1st.  Her lessons are very user friendly.
    • Website – https://rockinresources.com/
  • No computer or internet access – No Problem!
    • I am getting some resources together right now.  They will be available in the office for pick up if needed or preferred.

Social Studies:

  • Study Island
    • As mentioned in the ELA section, Study Island is a resources your children can use to work on 4th grade standards.  They will benefit from working on any the topics available.
    • One topic that we have not fully covered (we were almost there) is Economics – topics related to goods & services, profit & risk, supply/demand/price, types of money (currency, checks, debit cards, credit cards), and budget/income/expenses.
  • On the Beauregard Parish Website there many links provided that would be great for the use of 4th graders (Virtual Field Trips, Flocabulary, Brainpop, Social Studies Weekly).
  • Where we are right now:
    • We were currently wrapping up the topic of “Westward Expansion” and the impact of the Transcontinental Railroad, the National Road, and inventions like the cotton gin.
    • What comes next…
      • Progress & Change – Industrialization and Urbanization/The Changing Face of Cities
      • Impact of Technology – Innovation in Everyday Life/Our Shrinking World
    • I will make a page for just Social Studies.  On that page I will break some specifics of what those topics specifically cover for anyone that is interested.

Beauregard Parish School Board has put together a list of educational opportunities for all grades and subjects at the following link:
